My ultimate goal is to impact students’ lives in a similar manner to how my teachers have influenced my life. I recognize that I would not be who I am today without the teachers who have had the greatest impact on my development as a musician and human being. I believe that teaching by example is very important and am committed to the growth of each student as a musician and as a well-rounded individual.
It is my goal for each student to establish a firm foundation for their flute playing. Correct posture, hand position, and technique must be addressed throughout a flutist’s development to maintain healthy habits as one’s musical ability grows and as they mature physically. Articulation, phrasing, vibrato, intonation, and tone quality are key music principles that also must be addressed throughout a flutist’s development. Each of these elements are practiced and expressed in a variety of games and activities.
As a trained KinderFlute instructor, I believe physical activity is important for the most effective learning to take place. This is particularly crucial for younger students. Increased oxygen flow to the brain leads to an increase in the ability to focus, learn, remember, and handle stress. I incorporate some type of physical activity through private lessons and group classes for younger students that provide flute related memorization and coordination practice for students. I encourage all students, regardless of age and ability level, to complete some form of daily physical activity as well as maintaining healthy habits with and without the flute.
I believe that all students are able to flourish under proper guidance in a caring environment. I also believe that for students to be successful, the teacher, student, and parent must be equally committed to the study of the instrument. Parents need to be a part of their child’s musical endeavors while they are young to be an advocate for them and essentially an additional teacher at home. Everyone must have the same level of vested interest for learning to be successful. Parents are to help regulate practicing routines for younger children. As they grow, they inevitably become more independent, but I believe that parent involvement is crucial for children at a young age.
I am passionate about the flute and teaching. It is a privilege to be able to work with each student who I teach and learn from. Music has the ability to impact all aspects of our lives. While not all students will pursue careers in music, they will gain the confidence and motivation they need to be successful in any path they choose to follow. I strive to guide students to become not only better musicians, but to grow into well-rounded, compassionate human beings. My goal in teaching is to help each student discover their own unique strengths and help them share their contributions to enrich the lives of others as well as their own. It is my purpose to help everyone learn to enjoy a forever love and appreciation for music.
